Matthew 2

matthew 2 talks about the magi going to worship the king of judea.  and about how the king at the time king herod  want to kill all the babes boys cause he was the only king.  it also speaks about fulfilling the prophecies.

my question at this time is how do they know of these prophecies.  i mean are they written down some place. and if it is all oral tradition, how do they know it is what it was really saying.  Try this get a group of 10 people and sit in a circle, now you start and whisper to in the ear of the person on the right and say.  Eplhanets have no lips and love cookies.  then the perosn on your right tell the perosn on there right  and go areound the cricle till it comes back to you and see if the sentence is the same.   How do they keep it correct ofer 1000 years.  i am not saying that there are worng, i just want to knwo how they knew.

Big question is 'who the heck are these magi people'? Do they come from a land down unda? (LOL) I think if we get a hold on the magi it kind of helps explain their purpose.

As for the prophecies - they might not even be referring to the Jeowsh one's - but to the Gentile nations (since the Magi are not Jewish as far as I can tell). Maybe the point of this passage is to say to the Gentiles - even you have revelations of God that will also fit with this faith - so come like the Magi did. It makes sense, we do see Paul later on using Gentile religion and ideas to try convert people. Maybe Matthew is being inclusive here?

well i do not think they travels that far. back then that would have taken years.

good point, maybe matthew was reaching beyond the jewish community.
